Why Sedation Might Be Recommended
Feeling nervous about a dental procedure is very common. Sedation can be a wonderful solution for many patients, especially if you have a fear of discomfort or strong dental anxiety. It is also helpful for those undergoing complex or lengthy surgical procedures. Our goal is to create a positive experience, and sedation helps us do just that.
Your Sedation Options
We will discuss your needs and medical history to recommend the right choice for you. Our practice offers several levels of sedation to ensure your complete comfort.
- Local Anesthesia: This is used for all surgical procedures to numb the specific area we are working on. You will be awake, but you will not feel discomfort at the surgical site.
- Nitrous Oxide: Often called “laughing gas,” this is a mild sedative that you inhale through a small mask. It helps you feel relaxed very quickly, and its effects wear off just as fast once the mask is removed.
- IV Sedation: Administered directly into the bloodstream, this option provides a deeper level of relaxation. It is an excellent choice for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or those having more involved procedures.
A Focus on IV Sedation
IV sedation is a popular and effective choice for many of our patients. It allows for what is often called “twilight sleep,” where you are in a state of deep relaxation but can still respond if needed.
One of the greatest benefits of IV sedation is that our clinical team can precisely control the level of sedation throughout your procedure, ensuring you remain comfortable from start to finish. Most patients have little to no memory of the surgery afterward, which greatly reduces any associated anxiety.
Your safety is our top priority. During IV sedation, a highly trained member of our team will continuously monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure you are safe at all times.
Safety and Preparation for Sedation
To ensure your procedure goes smoothly, we will provide you with clear pre-sedation instructions. This typically includes fasting for a certain period before your appointment and reviewing your medical history with us. It is also important to arrange for a companion to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive for 24 hours after receiving sedation.
How to Choose the Right Option
The best sedation option for you depends on several factors, including the complexity of your procedure, your level of anxiety, and your overall health. During your consultation, we will take the time to discuss all these factors with you. We will listen to your concerns and answer your questions, helping you make an informed choice that you feel good about.
