What to Expect With Molar Extractions
Molar extractions follow the same principle of numbness first, but molars do come with their own considerations. Their position farther back in the mouth and their root structure means the extraction can involve more movement than a front tooth would. Knowing that ahead of time tends to make it much less startling in the moment.
When a wisdom tooth is involved, particularly one that’s impacted, the process becomes more involved. A wisdom tooth that hasn’t fully come through the gumline may require a small incision to access. This doesn’t change the during-procedure experience very much, since the area is still fully numbed. Where you’re more likely to notice the difference is in recovery, and we’ll prepare you for exactly what that looks like before your appointment.
Managing Discomfort as the Area Heals
Some soreness after tooth removal is completely expected. The extraction site is healing, and mild discomfort in the first few days is a normal part of that process.
For most straightforward extractions, an ice pack applied to the outside of the cheek in the first 24 hours and an over-the-counter pain reliever are enough to keep you comfortable. For more involved cases, such as a surgical molar extraction or an impacted wisdom tooth removal, our oral surgeons may prescribe a stronger pain medication to get you through the first day or two.
Most patients find the discomfort manageable and steadily improving. By days three to four, many people are feeling considerably better.
One thing worth watching for is discomfort that gets worse after the first couple of days rather than better. Increasing pain, especially alongside fever, swelling, or an unpleasant taste, can be a sign of infection or a condition called dry socket, where the blood clot that protects the extraction site is disrupted. If you notice any of those signs, a quick call to our practice is all it takes to get the right guidance. Neither situation is common, and catching it early makes it straightforward to address.
